Who will enjoy Family Sušec?
Family Sušec is made for families who would like to try canyoning together for the first time. The canyon feels like a natural aqua park. There is no classic abseiling down waterfalls during the main part of the trip, as most waterfalls are done by sliding, small jumps and walking through the stream.
The canyon is open and friendly, and at several places it is also possible to walk around waterfalls. This makes it a very comfortable environment for children. It is a great choice for active families who want to experience something fun together in nature. You do not need any previous canyoning experience. A bit of an adventurous spirit is enough. If your children enjoy water, sliding, jumping and moving in a natural environment, this trip usually fits them very well.
From what age is Sušec suitable for children?
This is the question we get the most. The general recommendation is from around 8 years old.
But age alone is not the most important factor.
What really matters is that children are able to walk confidently on wet and uneven terrain, on rocks and in the stream. This is usually more challenging than the jumps or slides. They should also feel comfortable in water, be able to listen to instructions and enjoy spending a few hours moving through a canyon. Every child is different, so we always look more at their confidence and coordination than only at their age.
How difficult is the trip for kids and parents?
When we say that Sušec is an easy canyon, we mean that it is technically simple. The waterfalls are done by sliding or small jumps and there are no demanding rope sections during the main descent. The pace is always adapted to families and our guides take special care of children. Every part is explained and shown step by step.
We work only with small groups, so every guest – and especially every child – gets proper attention from the guide. Parents do not need any special skills. You just need to be ready to move, walk in water and enjoy the experience together with your kids.
How high are the jumps – and do children have to jump?
The typical jumps in Sušec are up to about 2 metres. Sometimes, if children and parents feel confident and would like to try something slightly higher, the guide can show a higher take-off point by stepping a little higher up. This is always optional. No jump is ever mandatory. Every obstacle has an alternative way down.
What actually happens in the canyon?
To reach the canyon, we first walk up to the entrance. The hike takes about 30–40 minutes.
At the entrance we put on the equipment and the guide explains how to walk in the canyon, how to slide and how to jump safely. You also get a short and clear introduction to canyoning. Once inside, we move down the canyon and pass several waterfalls, from small ones up to higher drops. The obstacles are done by sliding and jumping. Between them there is walking – sometimes on secured paths, and sometimes directly in the riverbed.
In high season there are usually other groups in the canyon as well. Sometimes we pass them, sometimes we simply wait and watch them go down the waterfalls. There is one higher waterfall that we normally go around with families. At the very end of the canyon there is a 12-metre waterfall. Here we use a rope and our guides show you a fun and gentle way to go down. It is not a jump.
If a child or a parent prefers not to do this last waterfall, it is always possible to walk around it.
Why Sušec works better for families than other beginner canyons around Bovec
Sušec is more open and visually easier than many other canyons in the area. It does not feel narrow or closed in, which is usually much more comfortable for children.
Compared to longer and more complete beginner canyoning trips around Bovec, Sušec is intentionally designed as a lighter and more playful introduction to canyoning.
When Sušec might not be the best choice for your family
If your children are already older, very sporty, or already have experience with canyoning or climbing, they might be looking for a longer and more technical trip. In that case, a canyon such as Fratarica Canyon can be a better match, as it includes more rope work, higher waterfalls and a more complete canyoning experience.
A simple answer for families deciding today
Sušec is a very good choice if your family wants a first canyoning experience together, your children are around 8 years or older, you are looking for small jumps (around 2 metres), easy slides and a relaxed learning curve in a safe, open canyon.
